Our InvENtor Spotlight for October is on Kathy Day! Kathy has been a member of the Edison Nation community since 2013 and is an active Insider!
Where is your home town??
Where do you currently reside??
Sheboygan Falls, WI.
What is your professional background??
I currently work on an assembly line at Rockline Industries. We produce disinfectant wet wipes for many stores, restaurants and health care facilities. We also produce coffee filters.
How did you initially hear about Edison Nation??
One day, I was watching “The Jeff Probst Show” and Betsy Kaufman was featured with her Eggies. At the time I was a member of Quirky, but wanted to learn more about Edison Nation. I’ve been here ever since.
What inspired you to start inventing and when did you come up with your first great idea?
In 2005, I was walking through a department store looking for a pair of jeans for my teenage son. At that time, a lot of boys were sagging their jeans. I didn’t want my son to do that because I found it to be distasteful. I started looking around the store at all the jeans and realized none of them had a spandex band in the waist. I thought, with a band they could get the look they wanted without sagging their jeans. I invented a concept called “Flex Jeans.”
I went home, researched it and contacted a patent agent. I paid him to file a provisional application for me and trusted him to take care of everything. Long story short, he took hundreds of dollars from me, my time to file a non-provisional application ran out and he did not notify me. I found out when I contacted the patent office.
Have you ever collaborated with another inventor(s) on a project? If so, how was that experience for you?
No, I have never worked with another inventor on a project. Usually I go at it alone but would not object to collaborating with another inventor. Two minds are always better than one.
Do you find that invention ideas come to you or do you have to go after them?
Usually ideas come to me, especially where I see there is a need. When a new search?opens up at Edison Nation, I really get pumped up and excited to see what creative thoughts I can come up with.
What are some general industry trends you have noticed recently?
The comeback of the Nintendo Entertainment System. They now have a miniature NES edition that includes games like Donkey Kong and Super Mario Brothers. Its good to see these classic consoles and games being reintroduced to this generation.
What advice would you tell others embarking on their own inventing journey?
Stay true to who you are as an inventor. We all have a wonderful gift that we just have to tap into and believe in. Never give up, even when it seems bleak. Believe, believe, believe in yourself!
You have been an EN member since 2013, can you provide us with some details around your experiences and journey to date?
I have enjoyed every minute of my journey with this company. There are so many good people here, staff and members alike, that are willing to give a listening ear and sound advice to help you in any way they can.
We are a family here, not just a community. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
I look forward to what is happening at Edison Nation everyday!
What are some other fun facts about yourself that you’d like to share with the EN community?
I love adventure! I moved from Mississippi to Wisconsin just to get a fresh start and try something new. Yes, the cultures are very different. Yes, the climate change was drastic but I’m challenging myself and growing as a person and that keeps life interesting!
I also have a dog, Cane, who’ll be 12 in November. He’s my best friend.
Here are some photos she shot on a recent nature walk with Cane in Falls. I also love Fall and got some interesting pics of the fall foliage from a different perspective!
We’d like to thank Kathy for sharing her journey with us and have our fingers crossed for that G8!
