Coca-Cola Freestyle® partners with Everyday Edisons

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Many innovations have made their way through the Everyday Edisons studio doors. But, one might argue that there’s never been one causing quite a buzz, as the latest addition to our staff break room, the Coca-Cola Freestyle® machine from our Everyday Edisons Season 4 Technology Partners, Coca-Cola!

If you thought this was a place where innovation flowed and tough decisions took place before, just imagine the environment with 100+ brands to choose from and endless drink recipes to create! ;)

And while this machine is every soda or flavored water-lover’s dream, perhaps, most intriguing is the story behind its invention. Here are just a few cool facts:

  • It is the first fountain soda machine daring to go beyond the average limit of 6-8 consumer choices
  • The machine took 204 world-class experts from across the country and 4 years to develop
  • It was designed by Italian design firm, Pininfarina – Yep, it’s practically a Ferrari!
  • It won a Gold Award (the highest honor) at the 2011 Edison Awards in the “New Retail Frontiers” category

Be sure to tune in to Everyday Edisons Season 4, where you may just get a glimpse of this machine in action, and special thanks to Coca-Cola for their belief in innovation and partnership!

RIP Steve Jobs, An Iconic Inventor

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

For inventors, most often the driving force behind what we do is a goal to make life easier, or better in some shape or form. We’re sure we’re not alone in saying we can’t think of an inventor who has had more of an impact on advancing technology and meeting the goal of adding convenience and ease to this generation than Apple visionary and co-founder, Steve Jobs. To him, today, we say RIP to an iconic inventor.

To learn more about Steve Jobs, the inventor, be sure to check out this fascinating New York Times article chronicling the 317 patents on which he was named.

Solar Light shows how innovation can brighten your day — literally!

Monday, September 12th, 2011

When hearing the words “Pepsi Light,” many of us will likely think of the diet version of the famous cola drink. In this case, however, it takes on a whole new meaning! If you haven’t seen this inspiring video of a small community in the Philippines using old, plastic bottles (and a large amount of creativity) to solve a household problem, you must check it out! It certainly reinforces the life-changing abilities of simple, well-executed innovation!

Thanks to Diana Dumitru for telling us about this great innovation in the forums!

Mark Stark’s Prosthetic Hand lands on the cover of Popular Science!

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Today on newsstands – and in the homes of 1.3+ million subscribers – Mark Stark’s Prosthetic Hand graces the cover of Popular Science. Not only is it a true stand out on the cover, but Mark’s innovation leads the annual coverage of the “2011 Inventions of the Year.”

Back in February, a PopSci editor asked our team if we had exceptional innovations that met three prerequisites: featured a technological innovation, would impact lives and hasn’t hit the market yet. Mark Stark and his “Natural Dexterous Hand” immediately came to mind.

Mark has been a true sport throughout his first media whirlwind of phone interviews and photographers – and I’m sure it won’t be his last.

From all us at Edison Nation, congratulations Mark!

Around the World with Gyro Bowl

Friday, April 1st, 2011

Our very own Gyro Bowl has taken the U.S. by storm.

From the ever present As Seen on TV spot – “Oops! Uh oh! Watch out!” anyone? – to the viral Think Geek video that marveled the bowl’s pudding potential, most people I talk with are well-aware of the signature blue and orange orb of this notable children’s bowl.

Gyro Bowl is now taking over Australia as the hot go-to kid’s product. Check out this email from Target Australia. Gyro Bowl is not only making its official international retail introduction, but it’s also Target’s “Feature Product” of the week.

Congratulations to Edison Nation members, parents and inventors, Brad and Melinda Shepard! I can safely say that everyone at Edison Nation is excited to see the Gyro Bowl take over Australian households, saving parents from cracker clean up and giving children a new way to snack.

The Inventor Files

Friday, December 10th, 2010

As we wade into the deep end of the holiday season and immerse ourselves in tradition, I thought I’d start a little tradition of Edison Nation’s own.

Every month, I’ll profile an invention or product on our blog. I’ll include a biography, a story of the invention or product, and more. Email me at kelly.blinson@edisonnation.com if you’d like to have your invention or product featured in future blogs.

A few rules: your invention or product MUST be patented or protected.  I will not feature any ideas that are not protected.  Also, please do not send me ideas or requests to review ideas.

I’ll feature our first profile here on Monday!

Thanks!

Kelly

The Future of…Mechanical Bees?

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

spilomyia-largeTake a moment to read this interesting article in Business Week by John Lauerman.  Associate professor of electrical engineering at Harvard University, Rob Wood, is creating mechanical insects that could be used in agriculture, medicine—and even espionage.

http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/10_32/b4190040484472.htm

What do you think?   How would it affect the insects that call Earth home?  What kind of implications would it have?  Is he creating the wave of the future, or messing with evolution on a Jurassic Park level?

Ohio: More than Buckeyes

seal_ohio2Check out this interesting article from Crain’s Cleveland Business by Amy Ann Stoessel.  Turns out, there’s a lot more coming out of Ohio than LeBron James.

The most striking Northeast Ohio inventions of the last 30 years

An endless number of inventions and innovations have originated from Northeast Ohio minds, institutions and companies over the past 30 years.

Some are life-changing. Some are helpful and handy. And some, quite frankly, are just goofy.

Historically, the region has been a hotbed for all types of innovation — Thomas A. Edison even got his start as a young inventor just west of the area in his birthplace of Milan, Ohio.

Today, the region continues to be a strong contributor to the research, development and commercialization of new concepts.

Here are just some of the bright ideas to come out of the region over the past 30 years. Feel free to add to the list with what you think are the greatest and brightest concepts to be delivered from the area.

Inventor creates jetpack

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

JetpackGlenn Martin use to dream about flying around in a jetpack as most young children do. Now the New Zealand inventor has signed a multi million pound deal with an unnamed international aircraft company for the world’s first commercial jetpack.

“It is driven by two 200 horsepower propellers and can travel at 60mph for up to 30 miles on a full tank of fuel. And users should have no problem scaling over traffic black spots, with the jetpacks reaching heights of 7,800ft in test flights. Unbelievably, buyers will not even need a pilots license because aviation laws state the jetpacks are not heavy enough to require one.”

“No Idea Too Silly…”

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Kookiest InventionsHey everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself really quickly. My name is Elliott Van Ness, and I am currently interning at Edison Nation and will be a guest-blogger. I hope you all enjoy my posts.

To anyone who has ever thought his or her idea or concept was too ludicrous or far-fetched to be patentable, think again. According to the inventors of these 15 patent-holding inventions, their ideas were well worth the time, energy, and money they each put into securing their respective patents. Despite the various costs associated with acquiring a patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office, the annual number of patents filed from 1996 to 2008 has sky-rocketed 130%, to 485,000.

So, before you convince yourself that your idea isn’t worth the time and energy, take the time to read this article from Forbes.com on some of the most unconventional and unorthodox patent-holding inventions: http://www.forbes.com/2010/02/22/kookiest-inventions-patent-entrepreneurs-technology-patent.html?boxes=entrepreneurschannellightop.
