Happy 165th Birthday, Thomas Edison!

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

This Saturday, February 11, will mark what would’ve been the 165th birthday of Thomas Edison. If our name hasn’t clued you in, we kinda like Mr. Edison in these here parts! ;) So in celebration of one of the greatest innovators of all time, Edison Nation will host “A Week of Edison” from Wednesday, February 8 – Wednesday, February 15.

Join us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for a week of interesting invention facts, inspiring Edison quotes, and Edison-inspired trivia that could earn those history-sharp inventing enthusiasts a chance to win a free submission to any of our searches or a signed copy of our CEO Louis Foreman’s book, The Independent Inventor’s Handbook.

And since we’re reflecting on the life and work of Thomas Edison, there is no one who has put this into better perspective than he himself:

“I never did a day’s work in my life, it was all fun.” – Thomas Edison

The Boy Scouts of America & Edison Nation Launch Opportunity for Young Inventors

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Calling all kids, ‘tweens, teens, and college students… Show us your inventing skills!

Do you have a child, Scout or know of a particularly inventive kid who always seems to come up with exciting new ways to do things? Maybe they’ve dabbled with making, breaking and prototyping new product ideas that could change the way we live, the way we work and the way we play?

The Boy Scouts of America and Edison Nation are excited to host a special Innovation Challenge to discover cool, new products. We challenge those Scouts and non-Scouts, boys and girls, ages 7 to 21, to get inventing and submit ideas you think should be made and sold in stores! If selected, Edison Nation will invest up to $1 million to develop the products and make them a reality.

Watch the video below to learn more, then submit ideas at www.EdisonNation.com/BoyScouts.

What You Can Do to Impact USPTO Funding

Friday, November 11th, 2011

There are important decisions being debated in Congress as we speak around United States Patent and Trademarking Office (USPTO) funding. As a fee-funded agency, the USPTO relies heavily on fees collected from inventors and trademark filers to maintain adequate funding, so it is important that they have access to as much of these funds as possible. As patent-holders or potential patent holders, the upcoming decisions are ones that will affect you, and now there’s an opportunity to let your voice be heard and influence the outcome. Check out this article from IPWatchdog.com to find out everything you need to know and how you can get involved!

RIP Steve Jobs, An Iconic Inventor

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

For inventors, most often the driving force behind what we do is a goal to make life easier, or better in some shape or form. We’re sure we’re not alone in saying we can’t think of an inventor who has had more of an impact on advancing technology and meeting the goal of adding convenience and ease to this generation than Apple visionary and co-founder, Steve Jobs. To him, today, we say RIP to an iconic inventor.

To learn more about Steve Jobs, the inventor, be sure to check out this fascinating New York Times article chronicling the 317 patents on which he was named.

The President Signs the America Invents Act

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

If you hadn’t been following public speculation over the past several months of “will they or won’t they?” around U.S. patent reform, you’ve likely become quite familiar with the legislation since Friday’s signing of the America Invents Act into law.

Our own, Louis Foreman, who amongst a list of credentials, is well-noted for his involvement with the USPTO’s Patent Public Advisory Committee, received a personal invitation to the White House to take part in the festivities. Expecting to watch from the sidelines, Louis was both surprised and honored to be invited onstage to be at the President’s side as the bill was signed into law.

Below is video footage and photos from the historic event.

Solar Light shows how innovation can brighten your day — literally!

Monday, September 12th, 2011

When hearing the words “Pepsi Light,” many of us will likely think of the diet version of the famous cola drink. In this case, however, it takes on a whole new meaning! If you haven’t seen this inspiring video of a small community in the Philippines using old, plastic bottles (and a large amount of creativity) to solve a household problem, you must check it out! It certainly reinforces the life-changing abilities of simple, well-executed innovation!

Thanks to Diana Dumitru for telling us about this great innovation in the forums!

Edison Nation Announces 4th ASOTV Win!

Monday, May 16th, 2011

We have some egg-citing news about one of our beloved members within our community!

Here’s what you may or may not know quite yet about our friend, Betsy Kaufman.

For the record, Betsy is not your traditional inventor. Rather, she’s a mother in Texas, a wife and a television producer. If you were to ask her yourself, she’d tell you as much.

She’s just someone who had a “kooky idea.”

Kooky is being far too modest. Let us count the ways.

On a chance day in a Bed Bath & Beyond store, Betsy came across “Edison Nation” on the back of a store receipt. Lucky for us, this sparked an interest. She made her first foray into the Live Product Search world with Bed Bath’s Students of Invention search. We all know submitting an idea is half the battle. The real fun enters the picture as you keep an anxious eye on your dashboard for movement. Will it go green or will it go red? Inventing is a marathon, after all.

As Betsy kept watch on her dorm room ideas, she came across an As Seen On TV search for new camera-ready concepts.

And so, it was while standing in her kitchen one early morning, watching the water boil a few eggs, that she came across her “kooky” concept. What about a heat-resistant, egg-shaped container that prevented hairline fractures? One that kept you from laboring over the peeling of egg shells, the notorious bane of garbage disposals around the country?

While anxiously waiting to hear back on her “Student of Invention” ideas, Betsy decided to submit her then-named “Egg Toss” for ASOTV consideration. She did not have a single CAD drawing or a minute of video; rather, she had a well-explained, well-written description of her egg-making concept, which was soon selected for testing.

Betsy told me recently that “Edison Nation levels the playing field between idea people and real inventors.”

We’re all happy to be a part of the leveling. But it’s Betsy and our ASOTV partner that’s going to crush the DRTV space this year, giving Edison Nation our fourth ASOTV win!

Beginning today – Monday, May 16 – Eggies is going national, folks. You’ll also soon be able to find Eggies in select retailers this summer, and in stores everywhere across the country this fall.

According to our partner, early indications show that Eggies will sell in the millions and is on track to becoming one of the best DRTV products of the year.

How about that for a “kooky” idea? It’s going to be huge. And we’re all so excited to be a part of Betsy’s exciting journey as mother and TV producer-turned-inventor of mega-selling infomercial product.

Visit www.buyeggies.com and be sure to give Betsy a virtual high five in the forums!

And from the Edison Nation team,

congratulations Betsy!
