John Gudenkauf Moves Forward in the Innovation Fund Process!

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

As our team continues to review our Round I Innovation Fund submissions, we are excited to announce today another submission that will be moving to the next stage.

Congratulations to John Gudenkauf! His idea will progress to our Concept Research Phase!

As a reminder, during this stage, our team will perform in-depth research around John’s invention and answer several questions that will determine if his product meets the criteria for development. There are several layers to this process, however, some of the broader areas of this research include: problem vs. market need, details around the industry/market size, the long-term potential of the product, the status of the intellectual property, commercialization strategy, and the financial investment required.

More about John and his journey to invention:

For as long as John Gudekauf can remember, he’s always been intrigued by solving problems  and developing ideas for improving things. The son of a “restless entrepreneur,” John began getting his feet wet in his father’s businesses as early as 12 years old. As an adult, John launched a career in massage therapy, but also pursued the development of a residential remodeling business on the side.

It was during a project for this business, in which John had plans to build several micro-homes (200 sq. ft. homes), that the idea hit him for a very creative solution to save space in the home without sacrificing one of the biggest household necessities. John built a prototype for his idea, set out to patent it in 2007 and began working to build a business around it.  Unfortunately, over the years and throughout the process, John faced several financial setbacks.  In May 2011, after one final setback and more anxious than ever to move his idea forward, John learned of Edison Nation’s Innovation fund and submitted his idea.

We’re excited to move John’s invention into this important next phase and determine the future of bringing it to market!

Clifford Nowack Moves Forward in Innovation Fund Process!

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Our review team has been quite busy over the last several months reviewing the ideas submitted to the first round of our $25 Million Innovation Fund. As we continue to review submissions, we’re excited to share with you that one of the ideas we have selected to move forward, thus far, belongs to Edison Nation member, Clifford Nowack!

Please join us in congratulating Clifford as his ideas moves into our Concept Research Phase!

During this multi-step and often lengthy process, our team will perform in-depth research around Clifford’s invention and answer several questions that will ultimately determine if his product meets the criteria for development. While this research has several layers, some of the broader areas we analyze during this phase include: problem vs. market need, details around the industry/market size, the long-term potential of the product, the status of the intellectual property, commercialization strategy, and the financial investment required.

More about Clifford and his journey to invention:

A Southern California resident his entire life, Clifford Nowack built his career in computer programming, though always held a side-hobby in woodworking. He even began a side business selling some of his wooden creations in the California mountain resort community located in the San Bernardino National Forest, where he and his wife resided. Clifford’s life completely changed, however, in 2003, when massive firestorms swept across the area. The family was forced to evacuate in the middle of the night, and by morning learned that they had lost everything they had ever owned, including their life savings.

Starting over at 45 in a new home and on a tight budget didn’t leave much room for Clifford to reinvest in his woodworking hobby, or to hire help for home improvement, but the family did what work they could on their own. As it happens, it was during a “do-it-yourself” drywall project one day, when an attempt to solve a problem produced the spark of innovation that would lead to Clifford’s invention idea.

For the first several years, Clifford and his wife attempted to develop the invention on their own, even turning down offers from interested development firms. They felt they wanted to do it on their own and hoped to find family and friends to invest — but with the economic downturn, this proved extremely difficult. Finally, after feeling that they’d exhausted all resources, Clifford and his wife decided it was time to partner with someone with the skills and resources they felt they lacked and began researching development companies.

After careful evaluation, they decided to place their confidence in Edison Nation, submitting Clifford’s invention to the Innovation Fund in May 2011.

Now that Clifford’s idea is moving into the Concept Research Phase, our team looks forward to exploring this invention further and potentially bringing it to market!

Congratulations again to Clifford on his invention reaching this very important step!

Eric Huber, You’re a Season 4 Everyday Edison!

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

We are no longer getting warm; we’re officially hot folks! Today we announce our 9th cast member out of 10 for Season 4 of Everyday Edisons! So, without further ado…

Congratulations to our newest Season 4 Everyday Edison, Eric Huber!

Eric Huber has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. As early as 8 years old, he began coming up with ideas, writing them down and sometimes turning those ideas into creations. He once even built a 5″ tall, fully functional guillotine for a book report on the French Revolution. At the age of 16, Eric began Easels Creations, a start-up born from his love of woodworking in his father’s garage, where he designed and made decorative and functional easels for businesses, students, and artists. Seeing the success of his small company while still in high school, Eric realized the possibilities related to designing, making and selling things, which officially led to a lifelong passion for inventing.

Throughout Eric’s career, he explored many opportunities, including a brief stint as an actor and model; a second start-up, IDEA, inc., which supplied products and services to the local Oregon entertainment industry; and his current position as vice president of one of the largest commercial playground and outdoor recreation rep companies in the country. Even still, the inventing bug never left Eric, who continued to invent on the side as a hobby, creating a portfolio of 90+ ideas.

In 2009, things would take a turn and inventing would become more than just a hobby. Eric, with his portfolio in tow, attended a Las Vegas inventor convention, where the featured speaker was Edison Nation CEO, Louis Foreman. Inspired by his words, Eric approached Louis to ask for his advice and was introduced to Everyday Edisons and Edison Nation. He began submitting ideas to Edison Nation and auditioned for Everyday Edisons during the Season 4 casting call. It was there that a household product idea sparked by one of his wife’s unique housecleaning methods caught the team’s attention.

Now as a Season 4 Everyday Edison, watch along to see if Eric’s hard work will pay off and his unique product idea will become a household name!

View the video below as Louis Foreman offers Eric a spot on Season 4 of Everyday Edisons!

Submit your toy idea and Bandai® will give one to a child in need!

Meet the EN Team: Scott Dromms

Friday, October 28th, 2011

For someone outside of the Edison Nation organization, it may seem that product searches launch, close, and then some time later there is an announcement of the outcome. If you’re an Edison Nation Insider, you’re likely a bit more entrenched in the process, having anxiously awaited a time or two (or a dozen!) as your ideas gradually moved along the dashboard. In whichever category you may fall, there’s an unseen process that takes place for every single idea submitted to Edison Nation, and it is one of the most crucial components of the product search process: idea review.

Today, you’ll meet the staff member who oversees the Edison Nation review team, which works hard each and every day to evaluate your great ideas and give them a shot at success! Meet Scott Dromms!

Q1. What is your position within Edison Nation and what does it entail?

A. My title is Manager, Intellectual Property. I lead the review team and manage the review process. I also develop presentations and then have the pleasure and privilege to represent inventors’ ideas to sponsors, handle follow-up with the sponsors, and work to secure a licensing deal for products. This includes developing the financial metrics around deals and negotiating on behalf of the inventors and Edison Nation.

Q2. What do you enjoy most about working at Edison Nation?

A. My first day I went home and remarked to my family that I had never worked anywhere where the individuals I worked with were so brilliant in their given field. It is such a creative environment, and being able to represent the EN community and the innovative spirit that exists is so fulfilling. The interaction with the community is tremendous and I enjoy seeing people follow their goals, stretch themselves in the desire to succeed, and then being able to have the chance to inform an inventor that they have licensed an item… that is priceless. It’s such a rewarding feeling to see someone succeed in the pursuit of their dreams.

Q3. What are you likely doing on a Saturday morning?

A. Neighborhood Men’s Tennis Club for several hours and then spending time with my wife and 5 ½ year old twins. For the last few months, I’ve been coaching baseball for my son and watching my daughter’s soccer games.

Q4. What is one of your favorite quotes?

A. “To me, there are three things we should all do every day. Number 1 is laugh; you should laugh every day. Number 2 is think; you should spend some time in thought. Number 3 is you should have your emotions moved to tears — could be happiness or joy. But think about it — if you laugh, you think and you cry, that’s a full day; that’s a heckuva day.” – Jim Valvano, recipient of the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the 1993 American Sports Awards

Q5. What do you think is the greatest invention in your lifetime and why?

A. The Internet – the ability to connect globally instantly is amazing. To research and connect with family and friends are all great features. A REALLY close second is the Foreman Grill. I mean, to be a guy who likes to grill and to be able to do that inside as well… that was a great idea!!

Stay tuned for next month’s “Meet the EN Team” where you’ll meet the head of the Edison Nation PR team!

Eggies™ a Bed Bath & Beyond® ingenius kitchen gadget

Friday, October 21st, 2011

If you’re a loyal Bed Bath & Beyond® customer, you likely received today’s email donning the subject line “Which came first? The chicken or the Eggie?”, followed by an image that might be a bit familiar to you! ;)

As an inventor, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing your product sitting on store shelves… but it certainly never hurts to have it viewed by a rather “well-subscribed” email list! Congrats, Betsy! May Eggies’ success continue!

Q & A with Bandai America, Inc.

Monday, October 17th, 2011

You asked and they’ve answered! Below are the answers to your questions about our Bandai America Live Product Search, straight from the Bandai team! Don’t forget this search closes Monday, November 7, 2011 at 11:59PM Pacific Time (US & Canada). Happy inventing!

Q. Are you still pursuing Thundercats™ toys or are your interests, as it relates to this search, more in expanding the Power Rangers™ line?

A. We are interested in both.

Q. Bandai is obviously very focused on branding and partnering. Are you only looking to apply submitted products to one of your current brands, or could a submitted idea become its own independent product/new brand?

A. Both options are a possibility.

Q. Would you be open to the creation of new characters?

A. We’re not interested in new characters as a standalone, unless it is something extremely interesting and unique, with a “WOW” gimmick like Bakugan or as innovative and demographically broad as Robosapien™.

Q. Will you accept software ideas/algorithms which may be used for animated games?

A. Not for this particular search.

Q. Are you interested in ideas that expand upon your collectible card games?

A. Yes.

Q. Beyond action figures and collectible card games, do you have a fairly open license with the cartoons that you work with that would allow you to expand into other areas?

A. For us, the term “action figures” includes a wide variety of products. It is indicative of all figures of all shapes, sizes, colors, and materials. This ranges from impulse to high end collectables, and smart figures that might connect wirelessly online. Also, this category includes vehicles, play-sets and role-play and accessory products like trading cards and electronics.

Q. Are you open to ideas for group games, which both adults and children can play?

A. Not for this particular search.

Q. What is your brand image/message? (i.e., cool, fun, a bit edgy?)

A. “Dreams, Fun & Inspiration.” We like toys that are cool and edgy for kids ages 3 – 8 and that fill a marketplace void, or may even create a new sub-segment.

Q. Assuming you have seen many ideas both from inside and outside of your organization, can you give some examples of ideas or product categories that you do NOT want to receive?

A. Board Games.

Q. Do you have an interest in educational products?

A. Yes, but only for our brands Pocoyo (Nick Junior and PBS Sprout) and Tinga Tinga Tales (Disney Junior) which are geared toward kids ages 18 mos to 3 years.

Q. Do you divide your products into target age groups? If so, is there an age group that takes precedence in this search?

A. Yes. For this search, products for boys ages 4-8 would take precedence.

Q. Are you open to products outside of your current established age groups?

A. Yes, if it is something that is really cool and groundbreaking!

Q. Is there a target price range you desire for submitted ideas?

A. $20 and under is best, however, the breakdowns could be as follows: As high as $39.99; Best price point $14.99 – $19.99; Impulse $5.99 – $9.99.

Q. Are you looking for products targeted predominantly at boys, girls or both?

A. Boys first, preschool-age second, and girls third.

Q. In how many countries could/would chosen products potentially be sold?

A. Worldwide.

Q. Will new Pocoyo episodes continue to be made? If so, will they continue to be for both Spain and the U.S.?

A. Yes. Pocoyo is currently airing in the U.S. on PBS Sprout, Nick Jr. and Univision. It will soon be gaining more airtime on Nick Jr.

Q. Is Pocoyo a product line you would like to develop further?

A. Yes.

Q. I have some Bandai plastic scale models. Is scale modeling included in the search criteria?

A. It could be.

Q. I have an idea for action figures, but am limited as far as designing each action figure. Can I send various sample action figures from a Google search with my submission to get my point across, and if you like the idea, will you design the group of action figures for this idea?

A. The “concept” of a new action figure series would need to be quite thorough (i.e. determine the concept of the group; establish the traits or characteristics that make them “heroes;” develop a small storyline that highlights “why” they exist, and how they differ from other existing action figures). That being said, Edison Nation and Bandai would be willing to do design work to enhance that which is a very good and unique concept/storyline for newly proposed action heroes.

IP Enforcement: How We Protect You

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

An unsettling truth is that for every great new product that debuts on the market, there is someone waiting to knock it off. Products developed by our inventor community with Edison Nation are no exception. That’s why we have made it a daily effort to stay on top of any websites or social media outlets bearing information that is an infringement of our inventors’ intellectual property (IP). Not only are we serious about protecting our inventors, but we want to be sure to do all we can to protect the ideas that you’ve worked so hard to conceptualize and develop. What’s most unique about the enforcement efforts we employ is that we don’t look to anyone outside of our organization to oversee these activities. We, instead, utilize our own in-house resources to stay on top of any potential infringement activities 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Using the Gyro Bowl as an example, below are some of the measures we’ve taken, and continue to take, to protect Edison Nation’s inventor IP:

  • Registering Edison Nation with eBay’s Verified Rights Owner (VeRO) Program
We have registered Edison Nation with eBay’s VeRO Program, which allows us to send electronic Notices of Claimed Infringement to eBay for listings advertising counterfeit products that infringe upon Edison Nation’s IP. Year-to-date totals: 165 of 167 reported listings removed by eBay for a success rate of 99%. To view Edison Nation’s “About Me” page on the eBay VeRO site, click here.
  • Registering Edison Nation with Alibaba.com’s Intellectual Property Rights Protection Program
Alibaba.com is the largest online marketplace for business-to-business transactions between manufacturers, retailers and exporters. Many of the manufacturers listing counterfeit items for sale on Alibaba.com have minimum orders of 5,000 or 10,000 units. Year-to-date totals: 388 of 396 reported listings removed by Alibaba.com for a success rate of 98%. We’re just getting started, as there are several other listings we have reported and plan to report that have not yet been processed.
  • Utilizing Facebook’s Notice of Intellectual Property Infringement form
We report any Facebook pages that advertise counterfeit versions of our products. To date, we have reported three different Facebook pages dedicated to the Gyro Bowl knock-off known as the “Universal Gyro Bowl.” Facebook has a great IP protection policy that inventors should feel empowered to utilize. We’ve traditionally received a response within 24 hours and all three of the pages we reported were removed within that time.
  • Monitoring and reporting counterfeits on YouTube
While many of the counterfeit products we encounter are listed for sale on standard websites, believe it or not, we’ve even come across instances on YouTube where individuals have altered our infomercials to advertise their counterfeit product. As a result, we’ve stepped up enforcement by registering copyright protection for each of our infomercials and reporting any counterfeit videos through the appropriate channels at YouTube.
  • Maintaining alerts on all of our products
We maintain and monitor alerts for each of our products and contact the sales departments of any and every website offering for sale counterfeits. Within minutes of receiving those alerts, we are in contact with a representative from the company. In many instances, the website operators have removed the listings after we provide them with proof of Edison Nation’s IP in the form of our registered patents or trademarks. DHgate.com, a trading and selling website similar to eBay, has come onto our radar thanks to these alerts. Currently, we report about two to three counterfeits a day and have had a total of nearly 500 listings successfully removed from the site.
  • Sending internal Cease-and-desist letters
If a website operator attempts to register a domain name that is dedicated to marketing and advertising knock-offs that infringe upon Edison Nation’s intellectual property, we issue a cease-and-desist notice. The website operators have immediately taken down the website after receiving such notices.

Due to these efforts, we have had over 1,000 counterfeit listings removed from the web in the last three months alone. We share this information, not only so you, our inventors, are aware of how aggressively we work to protect the intellectual property you entrust us to develop, but also so that any inventor is aware of and feels empowered by the resources available to easily protect his/her intellectual property, free of charge and at their convenience, simply through the use of internet tools.

We encourage anyone with questions about our IP enforcement efforts to post their thoughts below, or for more pressing matters, please feel free to contact our Assistant General Counsel and Inventor Advocate, Rich Holmes, directly at Rich.Holmes@EdisonNation.com.

Meet the EN Team: Chris Engler

Friday, September 30th, 2011

If you enjoy the look and feel of Edison Nation emails, or find our website graphics aesthetically pleasing, meet the team member whose creativity brings those designs your way, Chris Engler!

Q1. What is your position within Edison Nation and what does it entail?

A. I’m a web/UX designer. My job involves designing graphics and working on front-end code for edisonnation.com, and weekly email communications to Edison Nation members. I also help provide art for day-to-day things like press releases, Live Product Searches, and whatever else comes down the pipe.

Q2. What do you enjoy most about working at Edison Nation?

A. Not only do I get to work with some very smart people who appreciate my work, but we’re located in a cool old industrial building near Uptown Charlotte and tons of good lunch spots.

Q3. What are the 3 things on your bucket list?

A. Take boxing lessons, learn how to play banjo or guitar, and own a beach home. Some of these goals are more realistic than others.

Q4. If your life had a soundtrack, what’s at least one song that would be on it?

A. “Do You Realize?” by The Flaming Lips. It’s a musically rich and compelling song with a bittersweet message.

Q5. What do you think is the greatest invention in your lifetime and why?

A. Broadband internet access. It has fundamentally altered the way human beings communicate, helped ignite revolutions in oppressed countries, and (much less importantly) allows me to make a living.

Stay tuned for next month’s “Meet the EN Team” where you’ll meet an Edison Nation staff member who gets up close and personal with member submissions!

Sure Fit Licensing Deal for Edison Nation Member, Anne Daniels!

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

In March of this year, we launched an innovative product search in partnership with slipcover and home solutions providers, Sure Fit. As the “covering experts,” Sure Fit hoped to find and develop new innovations to further its position as an authority in providing premier furniture covers and home accessories.

We are, now, pleased to announce that as a result of that product search, Edison Nation member, Anne Daniels’ wheelchair cover has been selected for a licensing deal with Sure Fit!

When Anne moved her mother into a nursing home in their native Massachusetts, she wanted to make the transition as comfortable as possible. With her mother wheelchair-bound, however, Anne noticed that her chair, made of vinyl and chrome, would make the goal of comfort one that was easier said than done. This sparked an innovative idea to create a wheelchair cover that would provide both style and comfort to the utilitarian aesthetic of wheelchairs.

Anne submitted her idea to our Sure Fit Live Product Search and in May 2011, the Edison Nation team selected Anne’s wheelchair cover as a part of the final presentation to Sure Fit. In what has proved to be an exciting and quick “product-to-showroom” experience, Anne’s wheelchair cover is well on its way to going mainstream!

Sure Fit’s Wheelchair Cover Market Week Showcase
Most recently, Anne’s wheelchair covers were proudly displayed at a Sure Fit Market Week presentation in New York, which was attended by several soft good industry retailers and manufacturers.

We couldn’t be more excited for Anne and anxious to see how far her product goes in the months to come! Please join us in congratulating her on this exciting news!
