You Win Some You Lose Some – Live Product Search Selections

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

features-lps-goldNow that we’ve kicked off the New Year, our partners are back in the full swing of things. We have some major announcements to share with Edison Nation inventors.

As Seen on TV
Decisions are in for the third ASOTV search,  3 products have been selected to test and there may be more!  Betsy Kaufman from Texas, Steve Redwine from Georgia, and Eric Huber from California will all have DRTV spots created for their ideas to test through a new cutting-edge platform we have created. These tests will run on television networks throughout the USA and, based on the resulting metrics of these media tests, well-performing products will be selected for a full rollout.

WestPoint Home
WestPoint Home has made their selection for their “double-duty” Live Product Search and we would like to congratulate Colleen Larreau from Nevada.

Hammacher Schlemmer
Hammacher Schlemmer also made a selection for its search for “the best, the only, the unexpected,” and congratulates Tom Goddu from Connecticut.

PetSmart
PetSmart has selected one product for their “improve lives of pets and their owners” Live Product Search. Congratulations to Kelly Fischbein from Ohio. More good news is to come. A second product in is the works and we will announce the selected inventor’s name when the agreements are signed.

About the Products
To protect the integrity of the inventions and to ensure the best product launch, we are unable to share product details while it is in development. However, as soon as these products roll out into the market we will make the announcement right here on the Edison Nation Blog.

… And You Lose Some
We also have some disappointing news. The BestSweet and “Global Consumer Products Company” presentations were well-received by both manufacturers; however, they did not see any ideas they are ready to invest in at the moment. We are obviously disappointed but remind ourselves that out of our 37 Live Product Searches to-date, these are the only two searches that have failed to result in at least one selection, earning us a very well-respected .945 batting average.

What’s in a name

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

In addition to traditional Live Product Searches, Edison Nation is now hosting “Name Searches” to get your clever ideas for new product names. In light of our new Name Search I want to share with you an article by Write Express which outlines ten crucial questions to ask when naming a product.

Who are my consumers?
What am I naming?
What type of a name do I want?
How long should the name be?
Do the sounds in the name have the right appeal?
What associations should the name evoke?
What are the foreign language implications of the name?
How should I test the name?
How will the name appear in directories?
Can I trademark the name?

For a detailed breakdown of each question click here.

Let the brainstorming begin!

Who is hosting searches on Edison Nation

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

ENTrusted by both innovation-hungry corporations and the independent thinkers of the world, Edison Nation is the source for introducing consumer-driven innovation to the marketplace. We began our pioneering approach with calls for product innovations on behalf of companies that did not have the infrastructure to work with independent inventors. Edison Nation has partnered with large and powerful retailers such as Walmart and Bed Bath and Beyond, as well as more niche companies like Street Surfing, the action oriented toys and sports products provider. But just how does Edison Nation get these companies on board for hosting Live Product Searches?

“We often start by prospecting among category-leading retailers and manufacturers who have the distribution channels and budget to bring new products to the marketplace,” explains Edison Nation Account Manager Meredith Beck. “We also try to track the latest news and announcements regarding those companies we hope to partner with. For instance, if we hear of a company that is looking to expand their own private label or put a more focused effort behind bringing new products to store shelves, we introduce them to the Edison Nation model.”

If you have a lead on a retailer or manufacturer that gives you reason to believe they would partner well with Edison Nation, please post your recommendation on the following forum, http://www.edisonnation.com/forums/live-product-search/topics/what-retailers-would-you-like-to-see-participate-in-live-product-search. Include the name of the company and why you think they would be a good fit, and you just might see their logo on our opportunities page!

Top 10 reasons ideas are not selected by the search sponsor

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Your idea has made it all the way to the green light on stage 7; was presented to the search sponsor, you anxiously awaited to hear updates; then, you received the dreaded red X on your dashboard.

We asked our project managers for the most common reasons a search sponsor may ultimately decide not to move forward with an idea.

10

10. The product appeals to just a niche market of consumers.
9. The product is not solving a big enough problem to be commercially viable.
8. The category for the product is crowded with competition and it will ultimately be a “me too” product.
7. The development for a product concept would be too costly to pursue for that particular sponsor.
6. The price-point for the product is too high or low for that sponsor.*
5. The item is too seasonal.
4. The sponsor is already working on an idea or product similar or identical to what’s submitted.
3. The sponsor has worked on a product similar or identical to what’s submitted in the past and it was ultimately a failure.
2. It’s our goal to encourage the sponsor to select as many products as possible, however it is up to them as to how many ideas they will license.
1. While it is extremely frustrating for us and the inventors, sometimes the response to a product is simply, “We just don’t like it.”

* The price point being referred to is one that the sponsor estimates based on materials, manufacturing costs, etc.

If your idea is not selected in one search, I hope that it will not discourage you to submit to future searches. In the words of Thomas Edison, “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”
