Hitachi a Partner for Everyday Edisons Season 4

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

It is with much excitement that we announce Hitachi as one of our Everyday Edisons Season 4 technology partners!

Over the past several months, our team has had the pleasure of incorporating the Hitachi Starboard into our show planning meetings. The interactive whiteboard has allowed us to display agendas and shared documents for the entire group to view together; seamlessly switch from viewing pertinent show documents to browsing the web; and, as our team has found most useful, the ability to electronically make notes and changes to documents and slides directly on the screen - a feature that comes in handy with the often quick changes required during the show production process.

Be sure to tune in to Everyday Edisons Season 4 this spring to catch a glimpse of the Starboard in action. A special thanks to the Hitachi team for joining us in this partnership!

Roger Berent & Kyle Hulewat Move Forward in the Innovation Fund Process!

Monday, December 5th, 2011

We are excited to announce another selection from those ideas submitted to Round I of our $25 Million Innovation Fund! Roger Berent & Kyle Hulewat’s idea will move into our Concept Research Phase, the first gate in our selection process to determine if we can bring this idea to market!

More about Roger and Kyle

As partners in their architecture firm, Roger Berent and Kyle Hulewat have always been interested in design. According to the two, this has created a natural progression into inventing, which is often borne from the necessity required by their designs. It was, in fact, one day while sitting around their architecture office discussing a new material sample,  that Roger and Kyle came up with what they felt would be an interesting, new way to use the material. As they brainstormed further, the pair established three “rules” or features their product would include, and with that, began working on a prototype. Though they ran into some setbacks in the prototyping phase, the duo eventually refined their idea, developed multiple variations, and even obtained a patent.

While making several steps in the right direction on their own, like many inventors, Roger and Kyle sought assistance with taking their invention to the next level — a bonafide product sold on store shelves. Both had become fans of Everyday Edisons after watching the first season, and upon researching the show, Roger came across Edison Nation. He continued to watch for new product searches in hopes of finding one that would be a fit for the idea, and finally felt he found the perfect opportunity when the $25 Million Innovation Fund was announced.  Roger immediately signed up  and submitted the idea.

Now that Roger and Kevin have been selected to move forward, our team will work hard and put our best efforts behind their idea in hopes of fulfilling their goal of seeing it on store shelves.

How to Package Your Product

Monday, December 5th, 2011

Presentation can be as important as the product itself By B. Collins Scott Lucas has bad news for those who hate clamshell packaging, the nearly impossible-to-open clear plastic fortress that encases many consumer goods – it’s not going away. While many holiday shoppers may lament this fact as they slice, gnaw and wrestle to free [...]

Q & A with SkyMall

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Thanks to everyone who submitted questions about our SkyMall Live Product Search. We’ve submitted your questions to the SkyMall team and now we have answers! We hope this information serves as a helpful resource for you when submitting your ideas –just be sure to do so before Monday, January 9, 2012 at 11:59pm PST!

Happy Inventing!

Q. With so many categories, could you share what your top selling categories & items are?

A. Home related products, Pet products, Electronics

Q. Excluding seasonal and sale items, what were your top ten selling products in the last year?

A. We apologize, but we have confidentiality agreements we can’t violate.

Q. If you had to choose three categories you would most like to expand upon, what would they be?

A. Unique pet products, unique electronic items

Q. What is your best-selling consumer price range?

A. $50 to $100

Q. Is there a limit or preference in price point?

A. Higher price-points usually work well for us.  Over $500 becomes a little tougher to work with.

Q. Does your customer base skew towards one gender over the other?

A. Our customer base is slightly more female, but we are much more male-oriented than most mail order catalogs.

Q. Are you interested in innovations in luggage (which has a higher price point in the catalog) or are you looking for items with a lower price point for this search?

A. Higher price-points are good, but items must have a good “value-to-feature” ratio.  Our customers are not particularly brand conscious; it’s more about what the product will do for them.  If it makes their life easier they will pay the price, but it can’t be really gimmicky.  The product should have a strong benefit/function factor.

Q. Why don’t we see more SkyMall products selling in retail stores? It seems as if there are so many cool, unique items that would sell well in these avenues. Is this a choice SkyMall made – to keep confined to the catalog? What does this mean for our prospective product(s)?

A. SkyMall carries unique innovative products that are not available in stores. Our customers will learn about an item in SkyMall, but would rather buy it in a store if it is available there.  Once it’s in chain stores it loses its uniqueness factor and we, then, must move on to other new and unique items.  We are great at getting products launched, but we lose the sale once it shows up in newspaper ads or in stores; we can’t compete with the big stores.

Q. What is your longest running product?

A. The Hammacher Turkish Robe. It launched in the book in 1991.

Q. Would you say your customers are open to buying products with accessories that must be purchased separately?

A. Yes, definitely.  Sometimes we can get up to 40% of the retail from line listed items or add-on accessories.  However, our customers do like the items they purchase to be ready to use and full function whenever possible.

Q. What is the average sized package that is shipped to SkyMall customers?

A. The average order size is about $120.

Meet the EN Team: Mary Dickson

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

If you’ve read about Edison Nation in Popular Science, watched a segment about us on CNBC, or seen our products featured both in national television and print media outlets, then you’ve seen the fruits of the behind-the-scenes efforts of Edison Nation’s PR team. Today, meet the staff member who oversees that team, Mary Dickson!

Q1. What is your position within Edison Nation and what does it entail?

A. I am the PR manager for Edison Nation, helping to lead our media efforts behind the company, our inventor community and our products. Our team dabbles in everything from media relations to social media communications and copy writing.

Q2. What do you enjoy most about working at Edison Nation?

A. As corny as this may be, I love the people here. I’ve worked at Edison Nation for four years, so many of my coworkers are great friends, and then some… (here’s to you, Ryan Gorman ;) . I enjoy the fact that we all work hard each day, but there’s plenty of room for humor and sarcasm, good music and the odd happy hour.

Q3. Where are you from?

A. I was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, hence my obsession with good food and drink! I’ve lived in Charlotte since middle school with stops in Boston (for college) and Seattle (for those fun and reckless years post-college).

Q4. What’s on your DVR right now?

A. My DVR is a bit all over the place. I may have to watch it from behind a pillow, but I am digging American Horror Story and The Walking Dead. I’m a sucker for reality television, including Project Runway, Top Chef, Next Iron Chef, Chopped, America’s Next Top Model. I maintain my youth and brains by watching Gossip Girl. I promise: I do have a social life.

Q5. What are the 3 things on your bucket list?

A. Travel to Greece and stay in one of those picturesque whitewashed buildings with the bright blue shutters along the coast. Master my headstand and crow pose in my bright-and-early power vinyasa yoga class. Cook and entertain like Barefoot Contessa, without having to follow a recipe or my beloved Food Network.

Stay tuned for the next “Meet the EN Team” where you’ll meet another staffer who plays an important role in digging through each of your ideas to find the very best ones — our Senior Product Reviewer, Kim Langdon!
